Starbucks Malaysia Brings Individuals Together Through ‘Green Outreach Program’

Starbucks Malaysia celebrates its 8th Global Month of Service (GMoS) by expanding its ‘Green Outreach Program’ to the community in Perumahan Awam Rumah Panjang Ikan Emas, Cheras to start-up a sustainable Community Edible Garden on 21 April 2018 with the hope of improving the livelihood of the Perumahan Awam Rumah Panjang Ikan Emas community.

Starbucks Malaysia collaborates with EcoKnights to bring the ‘Green Outreach Program’ to the community in Perumahan Awam Rumah Panjang Ikan Emas located in Cheras to start-up a sustainable Community Edible Garden with the hope of improving the livelihood of the community.

Children and students from Perumahan Awam Rumah Panjang Ikan Emas and Sekolah Menengah Sains Shah Alam work together to personalize the plant tags for the community’s first sustainable Edible Garden.

This year, Starbucks Malaysia partnered with EcoKnights, a non-profit environmental organization that champions sustainable living, and supports a community of film makers and environmentalists who embody diversity, innovation and uniqueness of vision. A total fund of RM 15,000.00 was successfully raised through the sales of limited-edition Starbucks Reusable Cups, of which RM 1.00 from every purchase of the cup throughout the month of April will be contributed to EcoKnights and their efforts in helping communities like this to build their own Edible Garden, and to operate green workshops for public.

A beautiful Saturday morning starts with a good cause when everyone works together to improve the livelihood of the community.

“This April, once again we brought together our partners, customers, employees, non-profit partners and civic leaders together to help make our communities stronger. Every Starbucks store is a community and we are committed to strengthening neighborhoods where we operate, just like this Edible Garden which we helped to start-up by retailing our Starbucks Reusable Cups at our stores. We hope that with the combined efforts here today, it will help the 400 members of this community,” said Ms. June Beh, Director of Partner Resources & Compliance of Starbucks Malaysia and Brunei.

Kids from the Perumahan Awam Rumah Panjang Ikan Emas can now have an opportunity to help the adults to plant and grow their own Edible Garden.

Mud balls are made up of a unique mixture of Bokashi wheat bran, clay and Effective Micro-organisms (EM) microbes which promote sludge process, resulting in the improved quality of polluted pond or river.

In addition, Starbucks Malaysia will also be working closely with EcoKnights to organize several workshops throughout the year which includes planting knowledge and propagation composting, culturing effective microbes, upcycling, and best practices for gardening.

Planting might seem easy but it actually requires patience and essential knowledge to grow and manage an Edible Garden on your own.

“We are honored to be able to collaborate with Starbucks Malaysia to organize these meaningful and effective programs that help to create awareness amongst the communities and Starbucks customers, in addition to educating them on the importance of taking care of our environment through impactful actions,” said Encik Fadly Bakhtiar, Programme Director of EcoKnights.

Together we can improve the livelihood of the community in Perumahan Awam Rumah Panjang Ikan Emas!
