Asean Jazz & Percussion Festival at SOULed OUT, Desa Sri Hartamas

I was invited to the Asean Jazz & Percussion Festival which was held at SOULed OUT, Desa Sri Hartamas from 19-20th September, 2015. Somehow I only able to attend on the second day but the shows and performances were pretty good and interesting. I reached Souled Out at about 6pm and managed to catch the first performance by our local percussion group, No Noise Percussion.

On the 19th September saw patrons having a ball to the smooth sounds of Koh Mr Saxman & The Sound of Siam, The Steve McQueens, WVC Trio + 1 and Steve Nanda Group featuring Dasha Logan. The next night proved to be more boisterous with percussions permeating the air as the crowd spontaneously got up and danced to infectious beats from Afro Asia featuring Steve Thornton & Special Guests, No Noise Percussion, Groove’N Roll and Akasha.

Even the dreaded haze miraculously dissipated over the weekend! Working in collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival under the directorship of Malaysian music icon, Michael Veerapen, the Asean Jazz & Percussion Festival drew a crowd of thousands over the 2 days.

Groove’N Roll from Indonesia.
Lenny Kravitz's doppelgänger doing the percussion! LOL

“It was a very exciting 2 days. Familiar faces came in droves plus new friends were made. I was just simply happy to see everyone enjoying the fantastic music, eating and drinking. That’s what SOULed OUT is all about, people coming together to have some fun and celebrating life. Because it was the start of SOULed OUT’s 20th birthday celebrations, it was that much more meaningful for me. I am honoured and blessed to be here today and I plan to be around for at least another 20 years!” remarks Fred Choo, owner and founder.

Akasha

Akasha performance to follow after Groove’N Roll and they delivered some pretty sweet Indian traditional beats and rhymes.

19 years ago in an insignificant shop lot in Mont Kiara, a small neighbourhood cafe opened its doors. It was called SOULed OUT. Armed with 4 staff, it slowly but surely won many a heart with its’ easy and familiar personality. Five years later, SOULed OUT moved to a bigger premise in Desa Sri Hartamas. Today, she has served over 5 million patrons and has matured into an assured personality with a fun loving spirit. This icon in the F&B industry is about to turn 20 and she kick started its campaign in true SOULed OUT style!

Fireworks showcase after the grand launch of SOULed OUT 20th Anniversary

The highlight was most certainly the 15 minute 20th Anniversary celebration launch gambit by SOULed OUT which saw the SO Gaya Dancers strut their stuff accompanied by fire flairing by the Bar Team and the lighting up of the 20th Anniversary monument. The gambit culminated in a jaw dropping Musical Fireworks spectacular which drew gasps from the masses.

Last performance by Afro Asia featuring Steve Thornton to end the night with a blast!

Afro Asia featuring Steve Thornton, the bald dude next to him really looks like Gandhi! LOL
Definitely a great night of music with my friends.
