The Brew House @ TTDI (Non-Halal Food Review)

It is definitely one of the most rewarding feeling to just have a couple of ice cold beer with good company and share good food together. Well, at least for me especially after a busy week at work and no time to sit back, relax and have conversations with my friends about anything. So lately, I have been invited to review a place called The Brew House which is located in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

On their website, it is mentioned that The Brewhouse offers an innovative approach to dining. A fusion of Pan-Asian to modern western gastronomy, their food is as inspired and varied as their beers. Whether you’re looking for a generous share-platter to accompany après-work drinks or a casualdining affair; The Brewhouse can accommodate, with a menu based upon fresh, local produce and inventive cuisine. So lets see if they can live up to the expectations.

Starting off with the snacks, I had the Salted Egg Fish Skin with Pork Floss (Rm13.80). The fish skin is crispy combined with the fragrance from the salted egg sauce. The pork floss adds a tasty meaty flavor into the fish skin without being too overpowering. Definitely a good choice as a light snack to go with beer.

Next is the Prawn Paste Chicken Wings (Rm15.80) and which is also know Har Cheong Kai in Cantonese. The chicken is nicely cooked and slides off the bones easily. The chicken wings are good on its own even without the dipping sauce.

The third snack dish that I had is one of Thailand's famous dish – Moo Ping (3pcs) which is Pork Neck Skewer (RM14.80) served with Pickles Slices and Thai Dipping Sauce. The pork meat was quite flavorful but I think this is not exactly a value for money kind of dish. It's more like to satisfy one's Moo Ping craving.

Right until this moment I have not discovered any Moo Ping that has the similar taste to the one I had in Bangkok's Chatuchak Market. It was juicy, flavorful and really cheap too! If you spotted any cheap and good Moo Ping in PJ or KL area, do let me know.

Then, I had the Bacon Wrapped Pork Meat Ball Braised In Connor’s Stout Sauce (Rm16.80)
served with toasted bread. I do like the texture of the bacon warpped pork meat ball and it was tasty. It is not something that I can easily find elsewhere and this dish is perfect for those who are not feeling too hungry to order a main dish. The only comment that I give is the toasted bread could have been a little more toasted. It felt like the same bread they used for the slider on the next dish.

For the final snack, I had the Porky Platter (Rm25.80). This dish consist of sliders with luncheon meat and char grilled pork, sticky ribs and roast pork. For someone who want to sample four different type of pork, this is for you. I enjoyed the sticky ribs and roast pork the most. Although the roast pork skin is not super crispy but I think it is passable for my own standard.

Now I'll show you the only pizza that I had in their pizza menu. It's the Smoked Duck & Peach Pizza (Rm18.80). This pizza is topped with caramalized onion, spring onion, balsamic reduction, smoked bacon, slice peach and mushrooms. For the price, I would definitely recommend this. The ingredients were rightly selected for this pizza as the compliment each other very well especially the balsamic vinegar. I'm glad that they use slice peach instead of slice pineapple.

The Brewhouse Char Siew Rice Bowl (Rm19.80) is the first menu listed on their Asian selections. This bowl consist of Char Siew (bbq pork), pickle lettuce, onsen egg, pickle ginger, spring onion and sesame. It was an interesting mixture of Char Siew with pickle lettuce and pickle ginger. I like the balance of the fattiness with the lean meat on the Char Siew.

Next up is the Lala Noodle Soup (Rm16.90) which is great for a cold rainy day! A bowl of mee hoon, wine, spring onion and ginger to keep my stomach warm and there were a generous amount of lala. Chewy and seafoody, just the way I like.

I also had the Braised Pork Belly (Rm15.80) cooked with tamarind and egg, served with rice. The braised pork belly is soft but not too soft. It somehow reminds me of home, food that was cooked by my parents.

There's three curry dish in their menu and I get to try two of them. The first one is the Nyonya Pork Ribs Curry (Rm14.80). The stewed pork ribs were nicely cooked with nyonya spices that gives it a very addictive taste in it. It is served with a choice of rice or bread. I'll go for the rice anytime. That's so Asian! Haha...

The second one is the Mutton Varuval Curry (RM16.80) cooked with okra. It is also served with rice or bread. I dislike eating okra when I was young but things had changed as I grow. I like the meat texture and flavor of the mutton just like how a mutton varuval should be and I did expect that it won't be as good as the one I had at my usual banana leave rice place but I was wrong. To all macha friends out there, do give this a try.

Here's something fun to try, it's the Fried Chee Cheong Fun (RM15.80). I've tried fried porridge and fried ice-cream before but that was the first time I tried this Fried Chee Cheong Fun. It's cooked with chilli, spring onion, garlic, seafood and beansprouts. Somehow taste like char kway teow to me with a good amount of "wok hei".

For mains, I had the Brew House Signature Pork Steak 250g (Rm19.80). It came with apple slaw, grilled peach, potato puree, sauteed vegetables and creamy peppercorn sauce. In the beginning when I saw this dish, I thought the pork steak would be dry but after slicing it piece by piece, it did not look dry to me and as a matter of fact, the pork steak was quite juicy and we did finished the entire dish despite our stomach were filled with so many dishes before this.

I also got the chance to try out one of their pasta which is the Vongole Chilli Clam Pasta (RM14.80). This pasta had brown clams, chilli, white wine, garlic and dill. I was quite shocked when I look at the amount of brown clams on this pasta dish. For the price of RM14.80, I think the taste and portion were really good. Definitely a must order for me next time!

Last but not least, the chef recommended their Weekend Roast which is the Flamming Chicken "Hot Chick" (Rm50++). For those who's wondering what's the benefit of flambé on the chicken; it is to infused the alcohol into the meat without boiling or cooking and to remove the liquid content of the alcohol itself. This chicken was served with roasted vegetables on the side. I personally think this can easily feed a group of 3-4 pax.

At last, I have done describing the food that I had in The Brew House. We ordered some drinks from the menu to go along with the food. You can check out the pictures below.

Mango lassi RM11.80 and Choc Espresso Smoothie RM10.80

Lychee soda RM7.80 and strawberry shake RM9.80

For their alcohol, they have a wide selection of beer, liquor, wine and cocktail at an affordable price. For an example, here's the a RM9.80 frozen mug of Carlsberg and only RM18.80 for a pint.

Overall, the taste and the price point the food in The Brew House were pretty good. There's no need to burn a hole in your wallet to find a place with affordable alcohol and adequate amount of good food. Their lunch menu starts at RM10.90 onward from 11.30am until 3.00pm with a FREE soup of the day, one scoop of ice-cream and a glass of soft drink. As of now, they also have other outlets in SS2, Sri Petaling, Taipan, Sunway Giza and Puchong Jaya. I hope they will open more outlets in Segambut or Mont Kiara area in future. Till then... cheers!

You can find cheap skewer meat and moo ping at one stall at the weekly pasar malam at Taman Megah on Sundays. I have been buying their assorted grills and cheese sausages! Very sedap!
