Shuddup N Dance 2019 Grand Finale at Klang Parade

When I was in high school, I was heavily influenced by the hip hop culture especially from the rap music, DJing, graffiti to b-boying or breakdancing. Although I'm not that great in breakdancing but I am always attracted to the performances especially when it comes to our local breakdancers. So recently I was invited to attend a dance competition press conference and it was indeed an exciting news that the popular street dance competition Shuddup N Dance will make its final stop for the year at Klang Parade mall.

The Shuddup N Dance press conference was held at Peanut Butter Studio in Klang Parade. The qualifiers will be taking place on the weekend of 17 and 18 August, followed by the highly anticipated International Grand Finals on 24 and 25 August, scores of dancers all over Malaysia and beyond have geared up and shaped up to compete in one of the nation’s longest running street dance competition, which turns six this year.

The Head of Marketing & Promotions for Klang Parade, Mr Alan Thoo said that,“The competition has come a long way since its humble beginnings. The challenges we face vary each year as well, so we try to keep up by maintaining a good rapport with different dance communities we’ve been fortunate enough to work with, who ultimately keep us abreast of developments and trends that are impacting dancers in the country.”

Part of this can be seen in the competition’s ever-changing roster of categories, which are never set in stone aside from a handful of staples such as the Junior Crew Showcase, 1-on-1 Open Style Battle, and Street Dance Crew Showcase. The changes are necessary to adapt to the fast-evolving needs of participating dancers, many of whom are eager to test and explore moves against opponents they wouldn’t be able to meet under normal circumstances. Shuddup N Dance has thus become the perfect platform for dancers to learn, share, and ultimately benefit from each other’s collective experiences.

“In a way, you could say that it’s almost like a report card day or a reunion for street dancers around Malaysia, many of whom would only meet during Shuddup N Dance and see how much everyone has progressed over the past year,” said Danny Lee, leader of the Rejuvenate Dance Crew and one of the judges for the competition. He is joined by a panel of veteran dancers, namely Faruq, Lego, Eddie, KK from Singapore, Chips from the Philippines, and Anton Slam from Russia.

One of the biggest highlights of the Grand Finals at Klang Parade each year are the international participants who keep returning each year, primarily from the Philippines where the competition has grown to become a rite of passage for many aspiring dancers there. With gravity-defying backflips and jaw-dropping costumes, the international participants add colour and excitement to an already vibrant competition, while setting a high bar to local dancers.

The grand finals for Shuddup N Dance will be happening on the 24 and 25 August 2019

“It’s one of the malls’ biggest event each year that really speaks to the youth of our community,” remarked Yong Shi Min, Senior Executive for Advertising & Promotions at Klang Parade. “It really is a pleasant surprise to see how much it’s grown considering how our intentions for the first were completely different when we began! We’re really pleased that Klang Parade has risen up to become this mecca for street dancers where everyone learns and grows together.”
