OPPO Enco W31 Review: The cheaper alternative to Apple AirPods Pro?

Back in October last year, Apple finally announced the AirPods Pro with a whooping price of RM1,099. As much as I enjoy using Apple products over the past few years, I am not willing to pay that amount of money just for a pair of Bluetooth earphones. So here comes the question, is there a cheaper Apple AirPods Pro alternative there in the market? Let's find out.

In the picture above is the OPPO Enco W31 earphones which were newly launched in May this year. The OPPO Enco W31 uses binaural low-latency Bluetooth transmission and is compatible with most smartphones. It has an extra-secure in-ear design, stronger water- and dust-resistance, these earphones are introduced as the next generation of true wireless audio.

Inside the box, it comes with a charging case together with the pair of OPPO Enco W31 earphones, extra earbuds, quick start up guide, warranty card, 2 pairs of extra earbuds and a USB-C charging cable (yay!). The earphones that I am reviewing is in white in colour but it does come in black as well. Specification information as below:-

The OPPO Enco W31 headphones use dual composite thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) and graphene diaphragms designed to improve frequency response. Two audio modes are available: for pop and classical music, a balance mode that evens out audio across the frequency range; and for rock and EDM, a bass mode that enhances low frequencies.

Some descriptions at the back of the box. The OPPO Enco W31 can trigger the bass mode or balance mode by double tapping on the left side according but I found that the bass mode is a better choice.

My favourite charging method... the USB-C port and cable! I wish every gadgets manufacturer will be doing more of this and stop using the Micro USB and lightning port.

The round-shaped charging case comes in a matte finish and quite pocketable as it is less than 6.5cm in diameter. As for the earphones, the size is less than 4cm in length and comes in a mixture of gloss and matte finish.

The earphones contain anti–wind noise chambers, two internal high-sensitivity microphones on each side, and an environmental noise cancellation algorithm designed to block out background noise during calls. However, it does not have the active noise cancellation feature like the one found in the Apple AirPods Pro.

Using the earphone, I noted that the latency is about ±0.5 seconds and it's definitely useable for gaming and no issue at all for calls, listening to music or watching videos. As for iPhone users, the only downside is that you won't be able to view the earphone connectivity pop up function on iPhone but you can still see the earphone battery life on the status bar.

Although the official recommended retail price is listed at RM259 but I found some sellers on Shopee are selling it for RM179 which made it even more affordable then it was before.

What I like: It is affordable, comfortable to use, decent mid to high audio quality and unnoticeable distortion on max volume.
What I dislike: No pop up function on iPhone, the bass mode isn't bassy enough and its loudness can be better.

My conclusion: Is this a cheaper alternative to Apple AirPods Pro? Maybe. If you don't mind not having the pop up function on iPhone and on a tight budget for something like the AirPods Pro – this is a good choice for you.
