Join the Usaha Tegas Heritage Art Competition to Get Recognised by Illustrating Malaysia’s Intangible Heritage

For the 21st year running, the Usaha Tegas Heritage Art Competition is here once again to invite budding Malaysian artists to celebrate the nation’s rich cultural history through art.

The annual competition is organised by the Usaha Tegas Group, an investment holding company owned by prominent Malaysian businessman, Mr. T Ananda Krishnan. The Group has interests in various local and international companies operating across diverse industries including telecommunications, media, property, and oil & gas. In line with the Group’s support for the field of arts, the long-running competition has helped many creative students pursue rewarding careers in the arts, and Malaysia’s art scene is made all the more vibrant with their contributions.

Keeping to the overarching theme of “Malaysian Heritage”, this year, participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from our nation’s intangible cultural heritage.

The competition recognises the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our nation, including limiting our movement and interactions, while at the same time enabling us to cherish the simple nuances of everyday life. This realisation has inspired this year’s competition to shine light on an often-overlooked aspect of heritage. Intangible cultural heritage includes oral traditions, performing arts, customs and social practices as well as cultural materials. Participants are encouraged to unleash their creativity to illustrate the impalpable legends, folk dances, rituals and crafts of our nation.

Young Malaysian artists who are currently pursuing their tertiary education are invited to take part in the competition to stand a chance to win up to RM82,000 worth of cash and prizes.

The first prize winner for each category will receive RM8000 in cash, while the runner up and third prize winners will receive RM3,000 and RM2,000 in cash, respectively. Two consolation prizes of RM500 each will also be awarded. In addition, an award certificate and RM500 worth of TGV Cinemas vouchers or its equivalent will be provided to all winners, as well as a certificate and a winner’s catalogue.

Students who are interested in participating have until October 15, 2020 to submit their entries. Participants can submit as many entries as they would like. The artworks will need to fall under one of the following five categories: oil or acrylic; watercolour; charcoal or pencil or oil pastel or ink; print making and mixed media.

Students may register their interest via  tiny.cc/UTH2020 or contact the Usaha Tegas Heritage Committee for more information, as per the following:
