Menya Sankodo at AEON Mall Metro Prima, Kepong (Food Review)

Just the other day, I had the opportunity to try some ramen at the new Menya Sankodo outlet in Kepong. Located at ground for of AEON Mall Metro Prima, they serve non-halal ramen which uses niboshi or small dried anchovies in their soup base. As it is more common to use anchovies as soup base for dashi, I personally think that it's more interesting and quite unique that they made it as the soup base for their signature ramen. The chicken, pork or tonkotsu (pork bones) are more used by ramen restaurants in general.

The food which I've ordered at Menya Sankodo. Would you believe that I finished these all by myself? Hehe...

They had their grand opening on the 13th of September 2024. It's their second outlet in Kuala Lumpur with its first one at Solaris Mont Kiara. I've never been to the one at Mont Kiara but as a fan of ramen, I am always curious to try out new ramen places.

Finding Menya Sankodo in Aeon Mall is not difficult at all, even if you've never been to the mall before, it's just right directly in front of the customer service counter at ground floor. The interior of the restaurant is simple and comfortable, with plenty of seats and tables that are not too close with each other. There's an open kitchen window to look at the chef and the staff preparing every dishes.

You can check out some the ramen and side dishes offered at Menya Sankodo below.

There's also this ongoing Sankodo promotion for a more budget friendly ramen.

My friend tried the Allin Ramen Shiro (RM18.90) that came with a Japanese soft boiled egg. I forgot to take a photo of it but my lady friend said it's delicious and the portion was okay for the price.

This is their Niboshi Cappuccino Ramen rich anchovies cappucino bubble soup with rare porkshank chashu. My first impression of this ramen, it is indeed foamy just like a cappuccino drink and I've requested mine to be spicy so they added chilly oil.

The price is different with different Niboshi intensity level as you can see below.
Level 1 – RM26, Level 2 – RM28, Level 3 – RM31

The porkshank chashu is long and slightly thicker than the normal chashu. The noodle is a little chewy and the texture is more towards udon-like but thinner and yellow in colour. At niboshi level 2, I quite like the soup to be honest. It's packed with umami and I personally enjoyed the taste and eating anchovies so it had a nice fish taste in the soup that goes quite well with the noodles. The fried anchovies which are topped did not go soggy and still crispy even though it has been submerged into the soup for a while.

The next ramen is the Niboshi Shoyu Ramen with Pork Belly Chashu. You can opt for 2 pieces of chashu (RM28) or 5 pieces of chashu (RM34). I think having the 5 chashu is more satisfying with additional of only RM6. The noodles are similar to the previous ramen but the soup base is less intense. The soup is clearer and no foam here and it is topped with pork fat.

This bowl of ramen is great for those who prefer a more toned down version of niboshi ramen. Although I enjoyed the porkshank chashu but somehow I felt that it is more satisfying biting on the thinly sliced pork belly chashu which melts easily in my mouth.

Next, I had the Fried Shishamo (RM25) with Japanese mayo as dipping sauce. This is definitely a great snacks or starter. Crispy fish bites that had a pronounced fish that that is balanced off with the mayo dipping sauce. I don't mind ordering this again.

Then I had the Jikasei Yaki Gyoza (RM15) which is also known as homemade Japanese pan-fried dumpling. The bottom side is pan-fried for a slight crispiness but I find the overall skin is a little too soft for my liking. The meat filling is good but no surprises here.

There's an instruction on the table side on how to make dipping sauce for the gyoza. With the dipping sauce, I found that it tasted better, probably due to the acidity and also I've added chilly oil for a little kick of spice.

Will I be returning? Yes, I don't mind having their Niboshi Cappuccino Ramen again. I would also like to their Kakuni Ramen or Oyster Ramen next. Maybe I'll visit their Solaris outlet too. Let me know what you think about this restaurant. Would you give it a try?
