LUMOS Tablet: Is This the Best Affordable Tablet in the Market Now?

My family and I have been using this LUMOS Tablet for almost 2 weeks now and in short, we enjoyed using it. For the price of just RM499, it’s actually adequate for normal uses, media consumption or letting the kids have some fun learning by playing educational apps.

For an extra RM99, you will get a Bluetooth keyboard, Bluetooth mouse, stylus pen and a case cover. So for those who are looking to buy this as a gift for someone, this will be more ideal for them.

Before I talk about what I like most about this LUMOS Tablet, let me briefly talk about the important hardware features. The tablet comes with a 10.1-inch IPS display size on a 1280x800p screen resolution. It is running on Android 14 version with 4+4GB of RAM and 64GB of ROM. There’s a SD card slot on the side next to the USB-C port for additional storage if needed.

In the camera department, there’s two. One is the front-facing 2MP camera for video calls, while the rear main camera is 8MP which I don’t think I will be using since my smartphone can take better photos. The battery life is at 6,000mAH capacity that can last me half a day or about 8 hours on paper but do note that the charging speed will take a bit of time since it doesn’t support fast charging.

Casting my show to a TV screen in my living room

The tablet has two speakers and it’s loud enough when I am watching my favourite shows or Youtube videos. If the screen is too small for my family members to watch shows together, I can cast it to our living room’s TV. We absolutely love doing this when watching the shows. The whole process was quite straightforward too!

If you prefer to use a wired earphone, here’s a surprise, you are going to love this tablet as it has an audio jack which is pretty rare for most devices these days.

As for productivity, the WPS Office app came pre-installed for Microsoft doc, PPT and PDF support. Replying emails and working on Google Workspace were quite seamless and the keyboard and mouse package actually made the experience better. I personally like the feedback from the keyboard and it’s thin and light too making it easy to carry it in my sling bag. I can blog on the go when I am out and about since I only have a desktop computer at home.

If you are looking for a tablet for your children, you might want to consider getting this tablet. I spent over an hour with my niece exploring and playing with the kids’ learning apps. My niece is 6 years old this year and her top favourite games are the Pixel Art and Recall Puzzle Game from Preschool Games app. We had a lot of fun together and it was so nice seeing her enjoying herself instead of watching cartoons or random videos on Youtube. We can set parental controls such as screen time, app timers, or bedtime schedules if we want to restrict the tablet usage for our children.

Since I don’t have a laptop, this is a nice setup to have.

My wife had also gotten her hands on this LUMOS Tablet and we created a separate account or space for her so that she can do her work and download her own favourite app on the tablet without overlapping into my account like WhatsApp and Google apps. With the keyboard and mouse set up, it felt like a work laptop for her but lighter and smaller!

Overall, I think this a good budget tablet for students, media consumption on the go, doing light work tasks and spending time learning with kids. You can grab one right now from LUMOS’s Shopee Store with a 1-year local warranty.
