Fans of Japanese curry rice and more specifically Monster Curry can rejoice as the Singapore's most beloved Japanese curry chain. I was at the grand opening of Monster Curry at The Gardens Mall, Kuala Lumpur last Friday and I got to try out some of their signature dishes. They are currently running a grand opening promotion, so do read until the end of this post to find out.
Singapore's leading Japanese curry chain brings its iconic larger-than-life portions and signature demi-glace curry to The Gardens Mall, Kuala Lumpur
Monster Curry is known for serving Japanese curry on an epic scale which has earned its reputation across Singapore and Indonesia. Now, Malaysian curry enthusiasts can experience what makes Monster Curry a household name – its signature demi-glace curry sauce, simmered with 14 vegetables and spices, served on massive 35cm and 41cm plates.
"We're elated to bring Monster Curry to Malaysia and introduce our signature deep, dark and rich brown Japanese curry sauce to a new audience. From our crispy katsu to our iconic super-sized platters, every dish is designed to deliver bold flavours, generous portions and a fun dining experience meant to be shared. As Malaysians love a little bit more spice in their food, here’s where we come in to provide that extra kick through our dishes with different spice levels for those who are feeling adventurous," said Raymond Ng, Managing Director of EN Group.
The Monster Curry Experience
At Monster Curry, size truly matters. The restaurant's signature offering comes served on oversized 35cm plates for individual diners and enormous 41cm plates perfect for sharing between 2 to 3 people.
Every dish features Monster Curry's homemade demi-glace sauce, delivering a rich, savoury depth that keeps guests coming back for more. What sets Monster Curry apart is how guests can choose from 5 spice levels to personalise their dish, from normal spicy to monster spicy, according to their spice tolerance.
Here are some of the dishes that I had at Monster Curry...
The star of Monster Curry's menu is the Super Monster Combo (RM 68.90) – a larger-than-life platter featuring a full spread of Monster Curry's most iconic toppings, from tender teppanyaki beef grilled with onions (flavourful yakiniku sauce), fried chicken cutlet (okonomiyaki sauce), fried big fish fillet (mayo), ebi fry (fried breaded shrimp topped with mayo), omelette and flame-torched mozzarella cheese, all served on a gigantic plate. This combo is perfect for 2 to 3 people, designed for sharing especially among groups of friends or families. You can still order it for yourself alone if you do feel superbly hungry or perhaps to challenge your stomach capacity. Haha!
At the heart of the menu is the Chicken Katsu Curry (RM 25.90) - perfectly breaded chicken katsu, fried to golden crispiness, paired with okonomiyaki sauce for that smooth, umami-packed flavour. Patrons may also opt for the Big Fish Katsu Curry (RM 28.90) that features a generously sized fish fillet with a light, crispy crust, offering a lighter yet equally indulgent way to enjoy Monster Curry's bold and comforting sauce. For our Malaysian taste bud, I think spicy level 3-5 are more suitable.
Chicken Karaage Curry Ramen Set (RM25.90)
For those looking to experience Monster Curry beyond rice, the Curry Ramen series features three distinct options from the Curry Ramen (RM23.00), Chicken Karaage Curry Ramen set (RM25.90) and the Chicken Katsu Curry Ramen set (RM 26.90) that blends rich curry broth with springy ramen noodles.
The noodles has a nice chew, not too soft but absorbs the broth very well. I enjoyed this ramen and would order again next time.
Those who prefer a fusion of Italian-Japanese flavours may look to order pasta dishes such as the Aglio Olio Feast Pasta (RM 25.90), Prawny Shrooms Pasta (RM 25.90), Japanese Carbonara Pasta (RM 22.90), or Curry Seafood Infusion Pasta (RM 25.90).
Takoyaki, 6 pieces of octopus balls (RM12.90) is a nice appetizer for sharing.
For desserts, indulge in decadent Honey Toasts like the Chocolate Banana Honey Toast (RM 18.90). Golden honey buttered toast, topped with fresh banana slices, smooth vanilla ice cream, and rich chocolate sauce.
Or the more popular one which is the Mixed Berries Honey Toast (RM 18.90). Golden honey buttered toast, topped with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, raspberry sauce and a medley of fresh strawberries and blueberries. It's a very good dessert after a heavy meal a good balance of sweetness and acidity from the fruits.
Yuzu Lemonade Mocktail (left) and Strawberry Lemonade Mocktail (right)
For drinks, we can get the refreshing Mocktails available by the glass or in sharing pitchers with the Coconut Lemonade (RM 11.50), Muscat Lemonade (RM 11.50), Peach Lemonade (RM 11.50), Strawberry Lemonade (RM 11.50), or Yuzu Orange Lemonade (RM 12.50) for a reinvigorating taste.
