Philips Sonicare Flexcare+ Sonic Electric Toothbrush (Product Review)

I brush my teeth twice a day daily, when I wake up and before I go to bed. Somehow I don't feel that it's enough and my previous visit to the dentist was not pleasant at all. I had to sit through a deep scaling procedure and it cost me RM180!!! Not only it's expensive, my gums were swelling for 3 days. It's still not to late for me to realised how important to keep my teeth and gums healthy. Good dental or oral care is important to maintaining healthy teeth, gums and tongue. Oral problems, such as bad breath, dry mouth, canker or cold sores, or tooth decay are all treatable with proper care.

Philips Sonicare Flexcare+ Sonic electric toothbrush
Recently, I received the Philips Sonicare Flexcare+ Sonic electric toothbrush. It's retailed at RM635.00 and most likely available at electrical appliances store such as Harvey Norman and Senheng. I am currently using a basic electric toothbrush with a rotating brush head so I will be comparing that one with this model.

Here's some photos around the box. Some of the technologies shown which includes patented sonic technology, 5 brushing modes, Quadpacer & Smartimer (I will go into that later), illuminated display, ProResults brush heads in 2 sizes and 3-week batter life.

The complete gum care combining patented sonic technology and 5 brushing modes, FlexCare+ electric toothbrush is your solution for complete gum care. Now we can improve our gum health after just 2 weeks of use. I have not tried it for 2 weeks yet so I will update my post after the period ends.

What's included inside the box and a reminder on the brush head.

Finally unboxed the Philips Sonicare Flexcare+ Sonic electric toothbrush. Seems like a lot of things that I am getting compared to the basic electric toothbrush that I own. There's a 2-year limited warranty. I don't think my current one offers any warranty.

Other than the instruction / manual, we will be receiving a Sonicare electric toothbrush, 3 brush heads – 1 standard and 2 compact, 3 hygienic travel caps for the brush heads, 1 hard travel case, 1 deluxe charger with stand and a 3-pin adaptor. The UV sanitiser is not included in this model just in case you are like me trying to find it cause the first page of the instruction did show the UV sanitiser.

The one thing I hate the most in all my gadget collection is to keep the charging cables neat but Philips has thought it well by making the stand as a cable cord organiser / winder too.

It's so simple, we just need to push open the stand case on the sides and place the deluxe charger in it and then coil around it. Then just place the stand case back in by letting the cable head out.

It will look something like in the picture above, pretty neat eh? The cable is about a meter long but I won't be charging the electric toothbrush in my bathroom anyway, so it doesn't bother me.

The coloured rubber ring at the bottom of the brush heads are pretty useful, that means more than one person can use this electric toothbrush by identifying their brush head according to the coloured ring. By default it's white, the 3 coloured rings come in this set is light blue, light green and dark blue.

To install the brush head, just align the brush head with the power button (green) and push it in.

Wala! It's so simple that even a five year old can do it.

Out of the box, the electric toothbrush has 2 out of 3 bars battery life. The silver or chrome button is to select the different mode on the electric toothbrush.

Five different modes for a better cleaning experience The five modes include a Clean mode for an outstanding clean in two minutes. A Sensitive mode for gentle yet thorough cleaning of the gums. A Refresh mode for those quick one minute touch-ups. A Massage mode to stimulate the gum and a Gum Care mode that helps improve gum health. To summarise, here's a list about the modes:-

Clean: For exceptional everyday clean
Gum Care: Gently massages gums
Refresh: 1 min mode for quick touch up
Sensitive: Gentle teeth and gum cleaning
Massage: Invigorating massage

Charging the electric toothbrush
To charge the toothbrush, just place it on the deluxe charger stand, there's also two other pegs to placed the extra brush heads. I prefer not to keep them there as it will expose to germs and bacterias from the air. Charging takes about a few hours and definitely a lot better than to replace my double A battery every now and then. It's better for the environment too.

It's good that the set comes with the 3-pin plug connector but I realised that the 2-pin plug cannot fit in our standard socket holes so the 3-pin plug connector is a necessary. Whyyyy???

The set also comes with a hygienic travel case which is pretty handy since it can fit 2 brush heads together with the electric toothbrush.

Here's how it looks when I placed the electric toothbrush and brush heads inside the travel case. I will suggest that it will be even better if it has a space to keep the travel size tooth paste too.

The moment of truth... time to brush my teeth!

Brushing time!!!
Here's my experience on using the Philips Sonicare Flexcare+ Sonic electric toothbrush:-

1) I did a mistake on my first attempt, I pressed start before putting the brush head inside my mouth. It resulted the tooth paste to splatter all over my face and mirror. Don't say I never tell you so... Hehe!

2) I like how the vibration of the electric toothbrush can actually reach deep between teeth and along the gum line. It feels kinda sharp when it hits my gum and it did bleed due to that. My old electric toothbrush can't achieve something like that at all.

3) The angled brush head neck can reach to back of my teeth especially wisdom teeth removing plaque in those hard-to-reach areas.

4) The two-minute timer actually helps to ensure the recommended brushing time but I ended up brushing my teeth 4 minutes (2 cycles)

5) Quadpacer interval timer encourages thorough brushing 30 seconds interval timer indicates when I have completed each quadrant of my mouth and signals me to move on resulting in more consistent cleaning throughout my mouth. The quadpacer sort of like a pause then it continues in 2 seconds, I didn't really it at first.

6) For the modes, I can't really tell the difference between Clean, Gum Care, Refresh and Sensitive. They all feel the same to me, just that the Refresh mode is a 1-minute quick touch up for the gum line. The biggest difference is the Massage mode. The vibration is slower but the movements are actually bigger, quite a nice feeling for my gums after I went through the Clean mode.

Something I read on their website, they mentioned that it has an easy-start program to acclimate to the Sonicare experience Gently increases power over first 14 uses to ease into the Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush experience. So I will update regarding this too, probably stronger vibration? Hmm...

Below is a picture of before and after brushing my teeth with the Philips Sonicare Flexcare+ Sonic electric toothbrush.

My teeth is definitely cleaner and as you can see, the dirt between my teeth is cleared and my teeth is slightly whiter than before. You can see that there's some swelling on my gum, well that means the electric toothbrush is doing it's job in reaching deep in between my teeth and gum line.

What I like most:
- The colour coded rings for brush head
- The fine bristle of the brush head
- Rechargeable without changing AA battery
- Comes with travel case
- Helps cleaning in between my teeth and the massage mode is soothing to my gum

What need to be improved:
- The 2-pin plug should fit our standard socket holes
- The brush head should come in 2x standard and 2x compact type (I'm that OCD, haha)
- Would be nice if the set includes the UV sanitiser

Price wise, it's on the high side. A lower price tag can attract more people to buy but then again if it really helps reduce plaques and calculus to form, this product will be a good investment. By the way, we must still visit the dentist every 6 months since this product is not to replace scaling and root planing procedure.

This product retailed at RM635.00 and the brush heads replacement, Sonicare ProResults Standard / Compact sonic toothbrush heads that comes in 3 units each are priced at RM109.
